Wi-Fi troubleshooting with the iPhone: roaming & analysis made easy

WLAN troubleshooting with iPhone

Have you ever had problems with your Wi-Fi? With the iPhone, we have a powerful tool at hand to quickly diagnose these problems.

Did you know how much information the iPhone provides during troubleshooting? We regularly carry out Wi-Fi troubleshooting with or for iPhone of our customers. In recent years, we have analyzed a large number of different end devices. But none of these devices delivered anywhere near as much data as the iPhone.

But with a large amount of data comes a big challenge when it comes to analysis.

In this article, I would like to show you two practical options.

iPhone WLAN roaming

Problems with roaming are probably one of the challenges we face on a daily basis. The user calls and complains about Wi-Fi roaming. How nice would it be if we had data for this? We have this data on the iPhone. Even retrospectively!

The iPhone saves every roaming process locally with additional information. This information includes the RSSI of the old and new access point. But also a lot of other information. This allows us to draw conclusions about the quality and coverage of the Wi-Fi without having to be active on site.

This data naturally helps us with troubleshooting. But why shouldn't we also be able to evaluate this information without any problems? We can easily analyze our locations for functionality without having to be active on site.

iPhone location

While the first example is very helpful in practice, the second example shows a different set of data. Have you ever wondered where you have been connected to the WLAN? Your iPhone knows.

Locally, each access point is saved with the possible GPS coordinates. This may seem strange to some, but in reality it also has a positive background.

The iPhone not only stores information about the coordinates, but also about the Wi-Fi networks in general.

Summary

These are two examples of data that we can export from the iPhone or iPad. However, there are a large number of other examples and information that the iPhone has ready for us.
